Surat to Udaipur — Getting There, and Where to Stay
A long day on the road, a reception that never closes, and free parking at the end of it
Surat to Udaipur by road
It is about 500 km from central Surat to our door, and roughly eight and a half to nine hours on the Udaipur–Ahmedabad highway. That was measured to the hotel’s own coordinates rather than to the middle of Udaipur, and it is deliberately a band: there is more than one way to do this run, the shorter one is not the faster one, and pairing the short distance with the quick time would give you a figure that is true of neither.
That is roughly twice the Ahmedabad run, and the whole shape of the trip follows from it. Almost nobody does Surat to Udaipur and still has an evening left. Whatever time you leave, the arithmetic tends to put you at our door in the dark, and the rest of this page is about that rather than about scenery.
The practical consequence is that the day you arrive is a travelling day and not a sightseeing day. Plan three nights rather than two if you want two clear days in Udaipur, because the first afternoon is going to be spent on a highway.
Arriving late, and what that actually means here
Reception is staffed 24 hours. There is no night bell to find, no shutter to knock on and no arrangement to make in advance — someone is at the desk whenever you pull in, and the lift runs to every floor so nobody is carrying a suitcase up a staircase at one in the morning.
Room service also runs 24 hours. That is the fact that matters most after a very long drive with children in the car, because the restaurant closes at 10:30 PM and a highway dinner is not always something anyone wants to repeat.
Now the part that trips people up. Check-in is 12:00 PM and check-out is 10:00 AM, and a hotel night is counted by the calendar date, not by when you happen to arrive. If you leave Surat in the morning and reach us at two in the morning the next day, the night you need is the one that began the previous noon — so book that date, not the one on your watch.
We are not going to promise you a free early check-in for arriving in the small hours, because it depends entirely on what went out that morning. Early check-in is subject to availability and may carry an additional charge; that is the position on the frequently asked questions page and we are not going to write a better-sounding version of it here. Where you park, and where your driver sleeps
After a drive that long, the last thing anybody wants is to be sent to look for a parking space. So, plainly:
Parking is free. It is outside parking, alongside the property, and there is no charge for it — not for a night, not for a week, not for the whole of your stay.
Your driver stays free too. Drivers stay in a dormitory with a separate toilet and bathroom, at no charge, for the whole of your stay. Driver meals are not included — that is the one part of it you pay for, and we would rather you knew that here than at the desk. Tell us when you book that a driver is travelling with you, and for how many nights.
What you eat when you get here
The kitchen is 100% pure vegetarian, all the way through, and there is no alcohol anywhere on the property. For a family from Surat that is usually the assumption rather than the question, which is exactly why we put it in writing instead of leaving you to check on arrival.
Proper Jain food — no onion, no garlic, no root vegetables — is available on request. Say so when you book. The restaurant runs 7:00 AM - 10:30 PM, dinner is served from 6:00 PM, and after that it is room service until morning. The first morning, and what is close
If you have arrived in the dark, the first thing worth doing is the lake. Fateh Sagar is 200 m from the door, a five-minute walk, and at seven in the morning the promenade is the calmest place in Udaipur. It is also the only thing on this list we will call a walk.
