Ahmedabad to Udaipur — Getting There, and Where to Stay
Free parking for the whole stay, a free driver dormitory, and a pure vegetarian kitchen at the other end
Ahmedabad to Udaipur by road
It is about 260 km from central Ahmedabad to our door, and roughly four and a half to five hours on the Udaipur–Ahmedabad highway. We measured that to the hotel’s own coordinates rather than to the middle of Udaipur, and we are giving you a band rather than a single figure because a single figure would be a fiction — the same road on a Friday evening and a Tuesday morning is not the same road.
It is the shortest of the Gujarat runs and the easiest to do without breaking it into two days, which is why so much of our weekend business comes from Ahmedabad. Leave after breakfast and you are here for a late lunch; leave at first light and you have most of a day in Udaipur still in front of you.
What we are not going to do is tell you where to stop, what the toll works out at, or which of the highway restaurants is worth the halt. We have not measured any of that and a page that invents it is a page you cannot trust about anything else either.
Where you park, and where your driver sleeps
Two questions decide where an Ahmedabad family actually books, and neither of them is about the room. Where does the car go, and what happens to the driver.
Parking is free. It is outside parking, alongside the property, and there is no charge for it — not for a night, not for a week, not for the whole of your stay.
Your driver stays free too. Drivers stay in a dormitory with a separate toilet and bathroom, at no charge, for the whole of your stay. Driver meals are not included — that is the one part of it you pay for, and we would rather you knew that here than at the desk. The weekend self-drive, in practice
The classic Ahmedabad trip is two nights. You arrive on the first afternoon with a car full of people who have been sitting down for half a day and want to stand up somewhere pleasant; the useful fact then is that Fateh Sagar Lake is 200 m from the door, a five-minute walk, so the first thing you do after parking does not require getting back into the car.
The second day is the old city — the palace, the temple, the ghats — and that is an auto ride rather than a walk from here. The third morning tends to be a slow one, because check-out is 10:00 AM and the road home is shorter than the road out.
A good number of Ahmedabad guests come up with grandparents in the car. Two things matter for that and they are both boring and both true: there is a lift to every floor, and the car can be left where you can see it rather than three streets away.
What we are not right for is the group that wants a lakeside terrace with a drink on it at the end of the drive. There is no alcohol here at all, and no bar. If that is the evening you have in mind, book somewhere that can give it to you.
What you eat when you get here
For most families driving up from Ahmedabad this is not a question that needs asking, which is precisely why it is worth answering in writing. The kitchen is 100% pure vegetarian — the whole kitchen, not a section of a menu — and there is no non-vegetarian food anywhere in the building.
Proper Jain food — no onion, no garlic, no root vegetables — is available on request. Tell us when you book, and the kitchen cooks that way for your whole stay rather than improvising on the first evening. The restaurant runs 7:00 AM - 10:30 PM, with dinner from 6:00 PM, and room service runs 24 hours for the night you arrive too tired to sit downstairs. One thing: the lake. Everything else on this list is a drive, and after a long day in the car that difference matters more than it looks on paper.
