1.5 km from City Palace, and what that actually means

1.5 km. That is a short auto ride and it is not a walk, and we would rather tell you that on the page than let you work it out on the second afternoon in the heat. If your requirement is a room you can see the palace gate from, we are not it and a hotel on the lanes behind the complex is.

What 1.5 km does mean is that the whole old-city cluster is one short ride away rather than a planned excursion. Jagdish Temple is 1.5 km, Bagore Ki Haveli is 1.5 km, and Gangaur Ghat sits in the same part of town. You can do the palace in the morning, come back, and go out again in the evening for the folk performance without the day turning into a logistics exercise.

Gangaur Ghat is on that list by name and not by number on purpose. We have not confirmed a road distance for it, and a page that guesses at one number is a page you cannot trust on the others.

Why we are not in the old city, and why that is the point

We are on the Fateh Sagar side of Udaipur, by Ambamata, not inside the old town. Plenty of pages would try to blur that. We would rather set it out, because the difference is the entire argument for booking here instead of there.

The lanes immediately behind City Palace were laid out for people and animals, and they still are. A hotel on one of them can give you a short stroll to the ticket window. What it very often cannot give you is anywhere to put a car — and if you have driven up from Gujarat or Rajasthan, that is not a small detail, it is the thing that determines whether the stay works.

We can. Parking here is free, outside, alongside the property, for the whole of your stay. The road in is a normal city road rather than something you have to reverse out of, and your driver has somewhere to sleep. The cost of that is 1.5 km and an auto fare each way. For a family with a car, that is a good trade; for a couple arriving by train who intend to spend three days inside the old town on foot, it is not, and you should book in the old town.

The other half of the trade is what is on this side. Fateh Sagar Lake is 200 m from the front door, a five-minute walk — the one genuinely walkable thing we have, and the reason the evenings here are quieter than they are three hundred metres from the palace gate.

Where you park, and where your driver sleeps

Parking is free. It is outside parking, alongside the property, and there is no charge for it — not for a night, not for a week, not for the whole of your stay.

Your driver stays free too. Drivers stay in a dormitory with a separate toilet and bathroom, at no charge, for the whole of your stay. Driver meals are not included — that is the one part of it you pay for, and we would rather you knew that here than at the desk. Tell us when you book that a driver is travelling with you, and for how many nights.

Getting to City Palace from the hotel

Take an auto. Reception will put you in one, and the travel desk can arrange a car for the day if you would rather not do it in stages. We are not going to print a fare here, because it is not our fare to set and a number we have not checked is worth less than no number at all.

We also do not publish the palace’s ticket prices, its opening hours or the timings of the evening performance at Bagore Ki Haveli. Those belong to somebody else and they change. Ask at the desk on the morning you are going and you will get the current answer rather than one that was right when this page was written.

The rooms, and what is in them

There are 19 rooms. All of them are air-conditioned and every one of them has a king bed, in all three categories — that is not a feature of the expensive rooms only. Standard rooms have a balcony, Deluxe rooms look onto the garden and Jharokha rooms have a traditional jharokha balcony with a city view.

None of them looks at the lake, and we say so on every page that could be read as implying otherwise. What you see the water from here is the rooftop, not any window upstairs. If you are paying for a window that looks out over Fateh Sagar, that is a different hotel and a different budget.

Eating before or after the palace

The kitchen is 100% pure vegetarian and there is no alcohol anywhere on the property. The restaurant runs 7:00 AM - 10:30 PM with dinner from 6:00 PM, and the air-conditioned dining hall seats 25 guests — small, and honestly described.

A palace morning tends to run long, so the useful facts are that breakfast is served from early and that room service runs 24 hours if you get back after the hall has closed. We would not, and we are not going to tell you that you can. It is a kilometre and a half through city traffic on roads that were not laid out for pedestrians. Take an auto; it is a few minutes and a few tens of rupees.
